I think it is very interesting that she would trust this 8 ball with things that seem so important to her at the time. For example: her hair. However, it seemed in the end that her hair change was for the better. She got a number from a guy. Even though the 8 ball said to cut her lovely hair and she didn't really want to she did anyway because she trusted it. She said she didn't trust many people in the beginning of the article, so to trust an inanimate object with her choices was very brave of her in my opinion. I liked this story a lot. I feel like I learned that even though it's hard to trust people, sometimes what they say can make things change for the better.
When I read "How to Get Lucky" I didn't really believe that he was talking about luck. He was really talking about the two different ways a person could perceive a situation and act based upon that perception. These two different ways are 'the negative' ('the too-focused') and 'the positive' ('the open-to-anything-that-could-come-your-way outlook'). I thought of what the antagonist in the movie "Titanic" said: "A real man makes his own luck." That's kind of what the author of 'How to Get Lucky' seems to be suggesting. Any person can be 'lucky' if their attitude and therefore their perceptions are shifted in the right direction.
I read the 'How to Get Lucky' article, and thought it was somewhat, inspiring. At the begginning of the article i was not in total agreement with the author on his newspaper experiment. I dont feel that luck has anything to do with who found the key phrases and who looked for the comments. Everyone has their own definition of luck. That experiment to me, does not deal with luck, it deals with who was smart enough to look. I feel that you bring about your own luck through your own thoughts. The lady who lost the dress for example, got lucky. She got lucky because she stayed positive. Your additude is what keeps you going and can control outcomes of different situations. We are all starting out as freshman, and its not easy for many of us. We can either fall in a slump or use our additudes and control our own luck. Those who are positive, get 'lucky' because of their ongoing additudes. I feel the author gets to this point toward the end of the article. We ourselves can either look at the glass half-empty, or half-full.
The beginning of the article "How to Get Lucky" made me believe that a certain kind of person had luck. The study that was conducted showed that people who called themselves lucky saw the print and stopped counting. This showed that if you just pay attention to a task then you aren't as lucky. But the end of the article convinced me that luck doesn't exist. Luck is different for each person. Luck is how you perceive the events that happen to you. In the article it talked about a bank robbery and someone getting shot. The person who was shot could either be luck or unlucky. It all depends on how you look at the situation. You could say that you were lucky because you weren't killed or you could say that you were unlucky because you were shot. The person who says they were lucky aren't, it's all how they look at the situation. Luck is something that we use to explain why some people win lots of money gambling and some people loose all they have gambling. That's not luck. It just is what it is. This article made me believe that luck is just in our heads. It's not real. If you think that you are lucky then you have a positive attitude not actual luck.
The 8 ball article was interesting in that she allowed her life to be altered by chance and with no direct influence from others just simply from the 8 ball. She had great appreciation from the 8 ball in that she had named it and it attracted others to become interested in trying it out, for instance when she was at the bar. Her out comes we equally probable and the results were at random without manipulation. She had no way of knowing or manipulating the results, therefore leaving all her decisions with the ball. It seems a bit risky to me.
In the article about the magic eight ball was very interesting. The lady in the story left her life in the hands of a toy. I do not think that luck was necessarily what the magic eight ball was about for her. It was more of an adventure. The eight ball gave her a reason to try new places and situations. Probability was a large factor in this story since there is a twenty-sided die inside of magic eight balls. I enjoyed reading this article. I thought it was interesting how she let thing that were so important to her for the magic eight ball to decide, such as her hair.
