I don't see this as much of a threat. It just seems like NASA got lucky that they saw two asteroids soaring near the Earth and moon. It was said that roughly 50 million objects pass near Earth on a daily basis. I think the two asteroids just veered off course and will return to safe distances from the Earth and moon. I mean maybe these are just a little closer than what we are used to, but I don’t see any reason to worry.
I agree with Tyler! I mean there are so many asteriods passing through Earth on a daily basis, why worry now? If there are repetitive accounts of close encounters with asteroids towards Earth, then there's a problem..
I believe that by NASA making this observation public that a lot of people may begin to panic. Even though they said it was not close enough for worrying, I believe some people are probably panicking at the idea of this. It was very interesting, however, that many asteroids do come that close to the Earth because I never knew that. On the other hand, amateur astrologists probably found this very exciting because now they can anticipate looking for more of these close to Earth asteroids.
I have to agree with Tyler also. How many times a day do asteroids pass earth. It is just a big deal because there are two of them and both pass on the same day.
There is so much stuff out there, and so much space. I really don't see the worry. I think everyone will know when we're going to get smashed by an asteroid. THe odds of something like this actually happening are very slim.
but you know, assuming thats what knocked out the dinosaurs, it happened once before, what were the chances of that happening?? its true that these asteroids weren't extremely close to us, but all it takes is one time.
Tyler, I don't think we will be seeing much of those asteroids, they will probably hit the sun or something. I feel that there is a misunderstanding of distances on the cosmic scale. The numbers may seem large in the article, but they are pretty small in the grander scheme of things. These asteroids had all of the universe (well, most of it) to travel through but they decided to pass between us and the moon. I think the odds of that happening are pretty slim. Now, the odds of the occurrence has little to do with the next asteroid. Well, these asteroids have about the same amount of influence on the next collision with earth as flipping heads on a coin determines the next value the coin lands on. Flipping heads multiple times does make it more likely that tails will be the next value it lands on, but the universe permits the scenario where heads is called correctly 100 times in a row. As food for thought, maybe our luck with asteroids is akin to this: heads being called correctly 100 times in a row. How long can this streak last?
Why do we need to be worried about this? How many times have meteors crashed into Earth in the last million years? There are many more important things that we need to worry about
I agree with Niki that all it takes is one time, but what is tracking them honestly going to do? It's not like we can move the earth out of the way of the collision. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. They said they found these two asteroids by luck, so who knowns how many other times there were these near earth encounters. I think it's interesting that we can track them, but if there's nothing we can do about it, we shouldn't blow it out of proportion.
I don't see why this is such a big deal. Meteors pass by us everyday and many have hit the Earth before. So why now is everyone so worried about it? I think that NASA made a big deal for nothing. We can't worry about things like this all the time. We would live a sheltered life if we did.
To me I wouldn't worry to much about asteroids hitting Earth anytime soon. Nasa may have seen objects close to our atmosphere, but its part of life and there's nothing we can do. In my opinion, I believe this is almost the same theory on how the world will end in 2012. It's just what you want to believe in. Everyone has their own opinion.
